State observes Manipuri Language Day

Commemorating the day the Manipuri language was inserted in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, the 35th Manipur Language Day was observed today at JN Manipur Dance Academy.
The observation held under the theme "State Song: Sana Leibak Manipur for Peace, Unity and Integrity" was graced by Home and YAS Minister Govindas Konthoujam as chief guest, MLAs S Rajen, Karam Shyam as guests of honour, Aribam Syam Sharma, the composer of Sana Leibak Manipur as special guest and former Union Minister of State Dr RK Ranjan as president.

Speaking on the occasion, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam said language is not merely a means of communication but an important expression of the identity, culture, history and civilisation of a people.
He emphasised the need to preserve, promote and develop the indigenous languages of Manipur and said that the linguistic diversity of the State is a valuable cultural heritage.
The Minister called for collective efforts to safeguard and promote the State's linguistic heritage for future generations.
Govindas further stressed the importance of strengthening academic and cultural initiatives relating to language by involving scholars, academicians, cultural organisations and concerned communities.
He also highlighted the need for appropriate Government policies and programmes to support the preservation and development of languages and cultural traditions.
Emphasising that language carries the history, knowledge, traditions and collective memory of a community, the Home Minister urged all stakeholders to work together towards protecting and promoting the linguistic heritage of Manipur.
Govindas further stated that the Government will make efforts to get Manipuri language recognised as a Classical Language before next year's Manipuri Language Day.
He sought support and cooperation from the public towards this endeavour.
The programme featured a patriotic song presented by AMMIK, followed by a keynote address Leihao-thabam Sharat-chandra, Convenor, Manipur Language Day Celebration Committee.
Pukhrambam Bilash Singh, Director (in-charge), JNMDA, delivered a short speech on "Role of JN Manipur Dance Academy in Promoting Manipuri Language and Culture" .
Heikrujam Devendra Singh, Programme Executive, AIR Imphal, delivered a short speech on "Role of Akashvani Imphal in Promoting Manipuri Language and Culture" .
A special address was also delivered by Aribam Shyam Sharma, composer of the State Song "Sana Leibak Manipur" .
