Imphal, December 18 2019: Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) is developing by leaps and bounds in the past couple of years and emerging as a premier medical institute.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the 12th Foundation Day cum Graduation Ceremony of the medical institute held at its auditorium today.

He stated that the State Government has been trying to fulfil the needs of JNIMS one by one although it takes time due to financial constraints.

The Chief Minister also said that the State Cabinet had approved the upgradation of Grade Pay for different categories of nursing staff of the medical institute apart from granting them nursing duty allowance of Rs 2000 per month yesterday.

The Cabinet also discussed the matter of seat reservation as well, although a final decision could not be taken, the Chief Minister informed.

Stating that it was not easy to bring JNIMS up to the level that it is today, the Chief Minister further said that untold efforts had been invested to make it a leading institute by the Government.

The medical institute has produced 403 medical graduates and 13 specialist doctors so far, and it currently has 499 undergraduate students, 140 PG students and 141 BDS students on roll, the Chief Minister informed.

Stating that the State Government currently has insufficient revenue source right now, N Biren Singh said that in order to fulfil the needs of the people in different sectors, multiple options are being explored to enhance revenue collection in the State.

This includes legalisation of cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes, the Chief Minister added.

Health Minister L Jayantakumar Singh, who attended the occasion as functional president stated that the State would be able to see the North East region's first National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) very soon as necessary mandatory procedures for the purpose are almost complete.

The Minister also asked the graduating students to serve the people with integrity and never undermine medical ethics.

He also observed that all the passed out medical students should never forget the oath taken on their graduation day in their lives.

He also asked them to be leaders in their profession and the society and work with full dedication and sincerity.

Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency MP Dr RK Ranjan Singh, Khurai AC MLA L Susindro, Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) Vumlunmang Vualnam, JNIMS Director Dr Th Bhimo, JNIMS Medical Superintendant Prof N Jitendra, Dean of Academics Prof W Gyaneshwar and Dr Kh Lokeshwar were also present as dignitaries.

Apart from releasing the Annual Report of the institute and college magazine 'Nongyin', the dignitaries also handed over prizes to the students who secured top positions in different examinations at the function.

Earlier, the Chief Minister also inaugurated the Lecture Complex and Tobacco Cessation Centre of JNIMS Dental College and Dependency Unit of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department.
