Guwahati, November 18: The All Assam Students� Union (AASU) has decided to go ahead with its decision to oppose the two-day visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the State from November 21 protesting the UPA Government�s decision to retain the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act.

"The executive committee of the students body in a meeting held here yesterday decided not to compromise on the demand for the scrapping of the IMDT Act," an AASU press release issued by president Prabin Boro and general secretary Amiya Kumar Bhuyan said here today.

The AASU president, general secretary and the advisor have been authorised to chalk out an action plan to oppose the Prime Minister�s visit.

The AASU leaders said the Chief Minister must prove the claim made by him that he was more serious on the issue of detection and deportation of foreigners from the state.

"If the Chief Minister is serious on detection and deportation of foreigners, he should implement the Assam accord within a specific time frame and call for scrapping of the IMDT Act," they said.

Meanwhile, five office-bearers of the All Guwahati Students� Union and All Kamrup District Students� Union have sought the permission of AASU to commit self-immolation but the students are being persuaded not to take such a drastic step.

AGP extends suport : Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh�s visit to Assam, opposition Asom Gana Parishad today extended support to the All Assam Students� Union�s proposed plan to disrupt his programmes during his two-day trip to the State beginning November 21.The AGP is strongly opposed to the UPA Government�s decision to retain the controversial Illegal Migrants� Determina- tion by Tribunal (IMDT) Act and extends all support to the AASU on this issue, party president Brindabon Goswami told reporters here.

He, however, urged the AASU leadership to prevail upon students who have threatened self-immolation during the PM�s visit to desist from such acts and adopt democratic means of protest.

The AGP president said that retaining the IMDT Act will only help in turning foreigners into Indian citizens and will not help in detecting and deporting them.

"The PM is a representative from Assam in Parliament.

Does he not have a responsibility towards the State?" Goswami wondered.

"He has failed to do anything for the State", the AGP leader alleged.

The PM will be visiting Assam to flag off the Indo-ASEAN Car Rally.
