Imphal, September 16:
In a milestone move towards unification of regional political parties in Manipur ahead of the 9th Manipur State Legislative Assembly elections, all the office bearers of MPP including its president L Borajao and their frontal organisations have resigned from their respective posts en masse.
The MPP central committee meeting on September 14 presided by Borajao at the party office made serious deliberations of the unification process and resolved to resign en masse to expedite the process.
Resignation letters of the MPP officer bearers, its frontal organisations Chanura Marup and other committees were submitted to the party president during the meeting after which the incumbent himself announced his resignation from presidentship.
Earlier member of the MPP working committee member AK Sanaton initiated the resignation process.
According to a leader of MPP who spoke to The Sangai Express, the resignation of the office bearers of MPP was a major step towards accommodating members of other parties who have merged with the MPP in its working committee and other committees.
He informed that MPP has been working hard to amend its constitution so as to accommodate the new entrants prior to the party conference scheduled for September 24.Though the members have resigned en masse from their respective posts to dispel any doubt on the sincerity of MPP concerning the unification of regional parties, the resignation would be made effective only after completion of the unification process as the party office cannot be kept vacant, he disclosed.
According to a reliable source, central committee members made strong protest during the meeting when MPP Legislature Wing leader Dr Nimaichand Luwang hinted at the strong possibility of Dr L Chandramani becoming new president of the party.
It is reported that the drafting committee of the MPP constitution has been working to include a new section which would make it compulsory for a presidential candidate of the combined party to be a member of his parent party for 5 years at the least and a man of known integrity.
The MPP leader also hailed the Preparatory Committee for retaining the registration number, name, symbol, flag and the constitution of MPP.
He further welcome the Manipur Nationalist Party set up by break away BJP members under Haobam Bhuban joining MPP.
As the constituent parties expect a strong regional force after the unification and optimistic of securing majority in the forthcoming elections, intense lobbying has started for the post of the combined party's president.
