Plan to resolve water crisis in Ukhrul spelt out

Ukhrul, January 15 2026: MLA Ram Muivah has set a plan to resolve the water crisis in Ukhrul town by streamlining policies on short term and long term basis and collecting water through construction of dams in the rivers/streams.

The Ukhrul MLA briefed Ukhrul media today in the presence of PHED officers and Khangkhui Khunou village leaders at the Divisional Forest Office, Phungreitang, Ukhrul.

Addressing the gathering, he asserted that his main priorities are to resolve the issues of water shortage and road connectivity in Ukhrul town.

In the past, he had raised the water scarcity issue in the State Assembly multiple times as starred questions.

Recently, he also sought the Manipur Governor's intervention to help find a solution to the water crisis in Ukhrul.

Speaking about an ambitious initiative that will address the water crisis in Ukhrul permanently, he highlighted a proposed project for construction of a multipurpose dam across Kongva River at Zingsui Village under the Externally Aided Project.

In this regard, a report on Kongva Drinking Water Supply & Hydroelectric Project prepared by the Water Resources Department, Government of Manipur has been submitted to the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India, said the Ukhrul MLA.

Additionally, Ram Muivah said the State Government has granted its approval to bring in water from Khaingalat River in Khangkhui Khunou village under SASCI (Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment) project.

However, the village leaders have opposed the construction of a dam at Khaingalat River.

Despite the objection, they have urged the MLA to include construction of an irrigation canal and highlight the tourism potential of the area in the DPR .

At the press briefing, Themreishang Marei, Executive Engineer of PHED, Ukhrul informed that while Ukhrul needs 13.7 lakh litres of water per day, currently only 5/6 lakh litres are available from different water sources.

As a temporary measure, PHED Ukhrul will utilize two water tankers on roster basis to reduce the issue of water shortage in Ukhrul town, he added.

He further informed that the Department has started construction of a dam at Yangui River at an estimated cost of Rs 23 crore funded under NDB scheme.
