Imphal, August 14 2026: As in other places, the Coalition for Indigenes' Rights Campaign (CIRCA) observed the 80th Manipur Independence Day by hoisting a flag embossed with the symbol of Pakhangba at Keibi Manaching, today .

The programme was attended by CIRCA president Thokchom Somorendro, Iramdam Kanba Apunba Lup (IKAL) president Naorem Memma Leima, Women Association for Socio Economic Development (WASEDEV) president RK Tharaksana, CIRCA vice-president Longjam Ratan and Irabot Memorial Trust president L Gunindro.

Speaking on the occasion, Somorendro said August 14 holds significance in the history of Manipur as the day commemorates the State's independence.

He, however, claimed that several efforts have been made to erase the historical significance of August 14 for the people of Manipur through different initiatives.

He called upon the indigenous people to preserve and carry forward Manipur's history and identity.

Somorendro also said the people should understand the circumstances surrounding Manipur's merger with India and the issues that have emerged since then.

Stressing the need to safeguard Manipur's identity and historical legacy, he said the indigenous people should remain vigilant against initiatives that allegedly seek to portray Manipur's Independence Day as less significant than India's Independence Day.
