Imphal, August 14 2024:
The United Committee Manipur (UCM) observed Manipur's Independence Day at its office at Lamphelpat, today.
The observance began by hoisting the Manipur flag.
At the function, UCM president Joychandra Konthoujam said that their (UCM) prime focus is on protecting the unity and integrity of Manipur and to pass down the land and resources of the erstwhile kingdom to 'our sons and daughters'.
Saying that the ongoing crisis in Manipur is a fallout of the scheme of illegal immigrants who want to break Manipur apart, Joychandra said that a unity of the people is imperative to defeat the inimical force.
Stating that Manipur got its independence back from the British Empire in the night of August 14, 1947 while India got theirs the next day (August 15), the UCM president added that Manipur regained its independence from the British regime a day ahead of India.
Manipur was once a kingdom with a history spanning thousands of years, he said and maintained that the erstwhile kingdom was occupied only two times throughout its history by the Burmese Empire (1819-1926) and the British (1891-1947).People of Manipur should never forget the valour shown by 'our forefathers' to protect Kangleipak.
Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation (MMWO) also observed the independence day of Kangleipak at its head office at Hatta by hoisting the Malem Pafal flag.
Addressing the gathering, MMWO president Boboi Korimayum said that MMWO has been observing the independence day of Manipur since its establishment over a decade back.
Saying that the independence day of Manipur should not be observed like a simple Mother's Day or Father's Day, Boboi said that every Manipuri needs to understand how Manipur came into being and how it has evolved over time.
