Imphal, April 12:
A total of 4684 kgs of ganja worth Rs 1.17 crores (approximately) seized by the Department of Customs from different parts of the State were consigned to flames today at a paddy field in Irilbung Kalika in Imphal East district.
Out of these, 3155.640 kgs of ganja were seized by the Customs Division Imphal from a paddy field of Khumbong beside NH-53 on September 14 last year, though without the owner.
The remaining 1518.380 kgs of ganja were seized on November 4 last year by Customs Division, Shillong from a field about 3 kms away from Sanakeithel village of Ukhrul district.
The contraband goods belonged to three individuals.
They are at present serving terms in the jail.
The compressed ganja was found packed in 247 polythene bags.
Under the supervision of Joint Commissioner (Prevention) Customs Division, Shillong, Arvind Madhavan, chairman of destruction committee and Assistant Commissioner of Customs Division, Imphal BB Adhikari, SP Customs Imphal S Nabachandra and SP NAB S Amirlal Sharma, the seized ganja was destroyed in the presence of local Meira Paibis and local club volunteers.
