Imphal, October 10 2026:
Demanding the resignation of Inner Manipur Lok Sabha MP Prof Bimol Akoijam on moral grounds, BJP workers took out a protest march and shouted slogans in front of Congress Bhavan along BT Road today.
Before taking out the protest demonstration, a meeting of BJP Mahila Mandal members and party workers was held at Thambal Shanglen, Nityai-pat Chuthek.
The meeting, which discussed the alleged sexual harassment case involving Prof Bimol, was presided over by Rajya Sabha MP A Sharda Devi, who is also the president of the BJP's Manipur unit.
Addressing the meeting, Sharda said that Prof Bimol ought to be taught a lesson for allegedly behaving inappropriately towards his students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) .
Stating that Manipuri society has immense respect for women, she added that Manipuri women have always been at the forefront of movements concerning various issues in the State.
Sharda said that the BJP would not remain silent when a Professor from the State is accused of allegedly behaving inappropriately towards his female students.
She also claimed that the Congress party, which is losing its ground across the country, has been protecting Prof Bimol.
BJP, however, would continue to demand the resignation of the Congress MP, she added.
Saying that 11 JNU students had lodged a complaint against Prof Bimol, she claimed that the Congress MP was dismissed from the university after the Internal Committee found him guilty of sexual harassment.
After the meeting, Sharda flagged off a protest march from Thambal Shanglen, which was attended by BJP Mahila Mandal members and party workers.
The protesters carried BJP flags and placards bearing slogans such as "Bimol Akoijam, Step Down as Member of Parliament", "Resign on Moral Grounds", "People Demand Accountability" and "Uphold the Dignity of Parliament", " Respect students", among others.
The rally proceeded towards Keishampat and Wahengam Leikai before heading towards BT Road.
As BJP workers marched towards BT Road, shouting slogans against Prof Bimol, Congress office-bearers and workers also came out and assembled in front of Congress Bhavan.
Tight security measures were put in place in the area to prevent any untoward incidents.
Security personnel made the BJP workers proceed towards the BT Park sides to prevent confrontation with Congress members.
When the rally reached the opposite side of Congress Bhavan near Johnstone Higher Secondary School , the BJP workers shouted slogans demanding resignation of Prof Bimol while pointing their placards towards the Congress office.
The BJP rally proceeded towards the western gate of Kangla before returning towards Congress Bhavan.
The protesters then shouted slogans in front of the Congress office before returning to Thambal Shanglen via Governor Road.
