MMTU continues with ST demand

The Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union has urged the Government to provide Constitutional safeguards for the Meetei community and to identify and deport illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar who have settled in Manipur, before the proposed Census exercise in 2026.MMTU, in a press release, stated that a meeting was convened today at Top Awang Leikai as part of the campaign demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Meetei.
It stated that the MMTU, Arambai Tenggol, village volunteers, and UFO have been conducting a locality-to-locality campaign demanding ST status for Meiteis and deportation of illegal immigrants, and today's meeting was held as part of this campaign.
The meeting discussed the impact of illegal immigration from Myanmar and Bangladesh to Manipur on the indigenous communities and the non-granting of ST status to Meiteis despite being eligible, it said.
The meeting held with the locals of Top Awang Leikai adopted a unanimous resolution calling for ST status for the Meitei community and demanding the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar.
