Imphal, August 07 2024: In what seems to be a case of suicide, a Rifleman of the 3rd India Reserve Battalion allegedly shot himself dead using his service rifle at the Thoubal Mini Secretariat building today.

The deceased personnel has been identified as Md Jafar Ali (52), son of Yusuf Ali of Sangaiyumpham Part-I Nungphou Keithel Mamang Leikai.

The Mini Secretariat building is located inside the Deputy Commissioner's complex.

He was reportedly on sentry duty when he allegedly shot himself dead.

A group of people rehearsing for the upcoming Independence Day (August 15) celebration heard a gunshot at around 8.45 am and rushed to the spot.

They found the Rifleman lying dead inside the sentry post of the Mini Secretariat building.

According to the police, he was given sentry duty from 8 am to 10 am.

Senior police officers of Thoubal district rushed to the spot and took stock of the incident.

A team of State forensic experts visited the incident site and carried out an inquest of the body and its surrounding area.

The body has been deposited at JNIMS Morgue for postmortem.
