Zebra crossings : Stopping points ?

Do zebra crossings serve any purpose in Manipur, particularly in Imphal ? The increasing number of vehicles stopping on zebra crossings during red traffic signals in Imphal has become a serious inconvenience for pedestrians, forcing them to navigate through traffic while crossing roads.
Even though encroaching on zebra crossings is punishable under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, motorists often violate the rule, reflecting both inadequate enforcement by traffic personnel and a lack of responsibility in public spaces among motorists.

At several busy traffic junctions, motorists waiting for the signal to turn green often stop their vehicles beyond the designated stop line and occupy the zebra crossing.
As a result, pedestrians are left with little or no space to cross the road even when the pedestrian crossing signal permits them to do so.
With the number of vehicles on Imphal's roads increasing steadily, the problem has become more pronounced, particularly during peak hours.
Two-wheelers, cars and other vehicles are frequently seen encroaching upon zebra crossings while waiting at traffic signals.
Some pedestrians told The Sangai Express that the practice of stopping on zebra crossing not only causes inconvenience but also poses a safety risk, as they are forced to move around vehicles and cross between them.
They also alleged that traffic personnel often allow vehicles to pass while pedestrians are crossing the road, while some motorists even jump red lights, putting pedestrians at risk.
They urged motorists to stop behind the designated stop lines and leave zebra crossings clear at all times.
Even though traffic personnel can sometimes be seen asking motorists not to encroach upon pedestrian crossings during red lights, action against violators is rarely seen, they said and called upon the relevant authorities to strictly enforce traffic rules and take action against motorists who violate traffic rules.
