Imphal, September 06 2025:
The Centre for Research and Advocacy (CRA), Manipur has appealed the Government of Manipur to uphold and recognize the affected villagers' right to housing and land rights over Lei Ingkhol village and consider their demands to stop and rescind the expansion of Manipur High Court Complex.
A press release issued by CRA Manipur has expressed concern over the eviction notifications issued by the Government of Manipur which allegedly classified the Lei Ingkhol villagers as encroachers despite having settled in their village for generations since the 1940s in Manipur.
The villagers have also expressed worry about the proposed resettlement plan alleging that it lacks clarity, proper consultation and the consent of the affected villagers.
The suggested alternative sites are not feasible to sustain their livelihood and culture, said CRA Manipur.
Additionally, they are also concerned as the Government of Manipur is "unable to resettle indigenous communities displaced by ethnic conflict and militarization in Manipur" .
The forced eviction will constitute a violation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, besides the Constitution of India.
The land acquisition move for the expansion of Manipur High Court and forced displacement will lead to complete extinguishment of the Lei Ingkhol village, affect the cultural rights of the indigenous villagers over their land and severe connection with the land where their ancestors are cremated, said CRA Manipur.
Saying that forced eviction will affect the children, women and elders the most, the Centre for Research and Advocacy (CRA) has urged the Government to put an end to all forms of forced eviction of Lei Ingkhol villagers.
