'Health service is beyond medical treatment'

Imphal, August 04 2026: Health Director Dr Nongthombam Hemantakumar has categorically stated that Government and private healthcare facilities are not competitors but complementary partners.

He made the statement during the second foundation day celebration of BABINA Hospital, Khabei-soi, held today.

Addressing the function at the BM Auditorium of the hospital, Hemantakumar said that healthcare services are not limited to medical treatment alone but also involve treating patients with compassion and care.

In the 21st century, he said, healthcare providers are not only adopting technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital health, telemedicine, robotics and precision medicine, but are also moving towards paperless hospitals.

Even though AI may replace certain functions performed by doctors in the future, he said that no technology can replace the compassion that humans possess.

Reiterating that Government and private hospitals are complementary partners, the Health Director said that while Government hospitals provide affordable health-care services, private hos- pitals adopt modern technologies and offer super- speciality services.

Even though there are certain limitations in public healthcare facilities, people can avail themselves of various benefits under Government schemes, he added.

He, nonetheless, said that public-private partnerships in healthcare services need to be strengthened to provide better services to the public.

Dr Thangjam Dhabali, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of BABINA Group of Companies, recalled how the hospital has evolved over the past two years.

He said that people's expectations are very high and healthcare providers need to work towards meeting them.

Patients come to a hospital with the hope of recovery, he said, adding that the outcome will mostly be positive if medical professionals and hospital staff treat them with care and dedication.

He said that violence sometimes occurs at hospitals due to communication gaps.

Stating that doctors cannot decide the fate of patients, Dr Dhabali said that medical professionals must, however, treat every patient with compassion and care.

Medical Superintendent of BABINA Hospital Shyamkumar Laishram also attended the programme.

During the observance, the Best Employee Award was also presented.
