Imphal, September 30 2026: 14 CSOs has declared a ban on non-Manipuri husbands of Manipuri women adopting local surnames.

At a press meet held at the KSA office at Khuyathong, representing the 14 CSOs, AMMOCOC president SM Jalal said that non-Manipuri men adopting surnames of their Manipuri wives has become a cause of concern, especially when the culture, tradition and identity of Manipuris are being threatened from multiple fronts.

To safeguard and protect the identity and interests of the Manipuris, such migration or adoption of local surnames by non-Manipuri men must not be allowed, he said.

Jalal further urged the authorities concerned including Sub-Divisional Officers and Deputy Commissioners to thoroughly check documents seeking change of surnames, and avoid issuing certificates acknowledging adoption of local surnames by non-Manipuri men.

Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union secretary (admin) Mutum Churamani, Kabui Union president Dr K Heera Kabui were also present in the press meet.
