Imphal, August 18 2025: A two-day national workshop on 'Upgrade of Manipuri Language to a Classical Language' organised by departments of English, Manipuri and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Ng Mani College, under the aegis of State Council of Educational Research & Training (SCERT), began at the college's auditorium on Monday.

The inaugural function of the workshop was attended by SCERT director Aheibam Romel Singh as chief guest and College principal Dr W Jibankumar Singh as president, while Ng Mani College General Body chairman Ngangkham Chaoba Singh and secretary Sarangthem Somorendro Singh were guests of honour.

In his address, director Romel lamented that inspite of discussion sessions periodically conducted in pursuance of granting recognition to Manipuri language as Classical Language, so far no positive steps have been forthcoming from authorities concerned.

As such, there is need for in depth deliberations on why the objective has been realised and make amendments wherever necessary, he stressed, while observing that upgrade of Manipuri language to the level of a Classical Language entails collective efforts of scholars and support of the Manipuri people.

Various other resource persons also shared their views and suggestions on the opening day of the workshop.
