Phungcham's traditional museum gutted by fire

Ukhrul, March 09 2025:
In a tragic incident, a fire completely destroyed the traditional mini museum located at Longkhan, Phungcham village in Ukhrul district on Saturday.
Among the items destroyed were the wooden sculptures of the legendary Tangkhul protagonists, Shimreishang and Maitonphi, and other cultural artefacts which were housed within the museum.
The Yangreiram Beautification Society (YBS), responsible for the upkeep of the park since 2016, reported the fire accident in a statement.

According to YBS convenor Rathing Horam, on March 8, YBS members were engaged in their routine cleaning and burning of trash in the area when a sudden gust of wind carried sparks from the fire towards the museum and consumed the entire structure, including the two iconic wooden statues and other valuable artefacts.
The mini museum and park, dedicated to the memory of the legendary lovers Ashang and Aton, was inaugurated on May 11,2018.Since its establishment, it had served as a cultural landmark, showcasing the rich heritage of the Tangkhul community.
