Bishnupur, January 30 2025:
Moirang District Demand Committee (MDDC) has asserted that in sync with the statement of chief minister N Biren on August 12, 2024 in the Manipur Legislative Assembly regarding need of district reorganisation, the government must table a district reorganisation bill in the upcoming assembly session to create Moirang district.
Addressing a press meet on Thursday, MDDC members disclosed that in connection with the demand they had submitted a memorandum and a map based on historical border to authorities concerned on December 9, 2024, explaining the reason for creation of the district and documental proof with regard to border of Moirang.
They also emphasised that Moirang, with over 2000 years of history, had its border up to Khuga Tampak and Tamu in the South and has many historically important places along with being a major centre of business between valley and hill regions.
The members recalled that people of Moirang, Thanga and Kumbi have been demanding creation of Moi-rang district for the past 40 years but their aspirations ignored repeatedly during reorganisation of districts in 1996 and again in 2016 when seven new districts were created.
They also alleged that due to ill-conceived creation of districts based on political and communal outlook many historical and religious places connected to Moirang like Thangjing hill, Torbung Lamjao or Khumujamba Lamjao, presently Churachandpur, Khumujamba Tenda Pung, Khumajamba Yumpham, Khumujamba Irel, Maikei Ngakpa Laipham, Mata Lok, Cheklaphai, Torophai, Tuyai Lok, Kakyen Ching, Yongmu Ching, Noibi Noidam Ching, Moirang Mantak, Salangthel, etc., have been separated and occupied by non-in-digenes.
Claiming that root cause of the ongoing conflict is due to creation of districts with vested interests, the MDDC members suggested that the present state government acknowledge the demand for creation of Moirang district based on its historical border at the earliest, as they are averse to the idea of launching agitation amid the prevailing unrest situation in the state.
