Due to the lackadaisical attitude of the State Government and its false promises, the Students Union of Pettigrew College (SUPC), Ukhrul, the lone college in the entire District and one of the oldest colleges of Manipur, is left with no other options but to launch a general strike beginning tomorrow following expiry of the ultimatum served on the Education Minister, on Aug 25, which Aug 29 as the deadline.
The student union while submitting the ultimatum had stated that they were constrained to set the deadline due to the acute shortage of teaching staff at the college and urged the Minister to fulfil the needs of the students.
The student body also stated that though 5 Lecturers were transferred Vide Govt' No.1/226/92-S/SE on November 29 last year, no replacements have been made which has adversely affected the academic atmosphere of the college.
Moreover, the Physics Department does not have a single lecturer at present and consequently SUPC submitted a memorandum on Aug 3, this year and its outcome a round table conference held at the Education Minister chamber on August 17 which resulted in the transfer and posting of six lecturers to the college Vide Govt' Order No.7(4)/4/2003-S/HE.However, till date the six lecturers have not joined the college, which has thrown the academic session into disarray.
Left with no other options, the student body is constrained to go ahead with its course of action and take up numerous agitations, said the students.
