Imphal, October 26 2024:
The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) and the Kuki Chiefs Association (KCA) Manipur have expressed strong opposition to the proposed border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border.
A joint statement issued by KIM and KCA Manipur alleged that the proposed border-fencing threatens to infringe upon the cultural, traditional and historical rights of tribal communities.
"The movement of people across the Indo- Myanmar border is not only a matter of tradition but also a vital lifeline for maintaining our social, cultural and familial ties with our kin across the border", it said.
The two Kuki bodies urged the authorities to reconsider the fencing project.
"Any development proposed or executed against the will and sentiments of the Kuki people will be considered a threat to our culture and identity and will be befittingly responded by the Kuki people", they said.
