Imphal, August 26: The All Manipur Democratic Women's Association (AMDWA) today held a meeting to discuss various problems faced by the women community of the State and also the much debated dress code of women.

Dress code of women had recently come into the spot light following the diktats of an underground outfit debarring women from wearing salwars, pants and sari.

After discussing at length the diktats concerning women's dress the meeting adopted a 4-point resolution.

The meeting resolved that the punishment sounded by the organization concerned against violators of its dress code is too severe and asked the concerned to retract from its extreme stand.

It was also resolved to launch campaigns to discourage anyone from provocative dressing.

It also resolved that women should dress according to the situation and occasion and also according to their profession.

A mass meeting for women to discuss the other problems and hazards faced by women would also be held soon, it was resolved.

An organizing committee for the meeting would be set up and the AMDWA has been entrusted with the task of convening a meeting.

A number of eminent personalities including president of AMDWA M Landhoni Devi, president of All Manipur Women's Association RK Mukhrasana, advocate Khaidem Mani, vice president of AMDWA O Tarunbala, retd Deputy Director of Social Welfare Y Seityabati, Principal of ICS Romibala Devi, president of Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Lup, Kombi Devi, Dr L Ibetombi Devi and Secretary of All Manipur Nupi Marup, Sakhi Devi took the dais.

Professor Kh Bimola Devi was the mediator.

Addressing the gathering Prof Bimola said no single aspect should be seen in isolation if development is to be ushered in a society.

Along with modernization many aspects including dress sense, eating habits and others undergo dynamic changes.

The changing dress sense of women in the State should be viewed in its entirety and the threat of physical punishment is too extreme, she said adding that it would do good for all if the extreme stand is softened up a little bit.

Advocate Khaidem Mani said dress code should be seen according to the situation.
