Imphal, September 22 2026: Manipuri cinema marked a significant presence at the 72nd National Film Awards 2024, with Manipuri feature film Sunita receiving the Best Manipuri Feature Film Award.

Sunita tells the story of a visually impaired woman who faces extraordinary challenges in her pursuit of education, independence and dignity.

Director Ajit Yumnam and producer Yumnam Brojen Singh received the prestigious National award from President Droupadi Murmu, at the award distribution ceremony held at Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, today.

Actress Naramada Sougaijam and supporting actress Binita Yumnam also attended the ceremony held at the Statue of Unity Bus Bay Area, Ekta Nagar, Kevadia, Gujarat.

Addressing the function as the chief guest, the President congratulated all the award winners.

She also lauded the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for its efforts to promote regional films.

Speaking to The Sangai Express, Narmada, who played the lead role in the film, said she was delighted that her efforts had contributed to the film winning the National Award.

She said she would continue her efforts to promote Manipuri cinema and contribute to its growth and recognition.

She said the Manipuri film industry now has talented directors and writers and is no less capable than the film industries of other States.

Adding further distinction to Manipur's presence at the 72nd National Film Awards, documentary filmmaker James Khangenbam served as a Central Jury Member in the Non-Feature Film Category, while filmmaker Thokchom Jimmy served on the Eastern Panel in the Feature Film Category.

The event was also attended by Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of State (Information and Broadcasting) L Murugan, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Rajnikant Patel.
