Imphal, August 22 2024:
Congress MLAs did not attend the meeting of the Assembly Committee on illegal immigrants as it was postponed without giving any reason, clarified S Shyamcharan, chairman of MPCC Legal Department today.
The Committee's meeting was scheduled to take place on August 20, but it was postponed for reasons unknown.
The BJP's claim that the meeting was postponed as Congress MLAs were out of station is unfounded and unfortunate, he said.
Notably, the 12-member House Committee was constituted on August 7 by the State Assembly to investigate and look into the influx of illegal immigrants into Manipur and unnatural increase in the number of villages.
The Committee is headed by Awangbow Newmai, Water Resources Minister as the Chairman.
Other members of the committee include Tribal Affairs Minister Letpao Haokip, CAF&PD Minister L Susindro, Education Minister Th Basanta Kumar, HAC Chairman Dinganglung Gangmei, and MLAs including K Meghachandra, Th Lokeshwar, Md Abdul Nasir, K Leishiyo, Surjakumar Okram, Kh Ibomcha and Th Shanti.
The Committee is due to submit its report within 3 months.
At Congress Bhavan at BT Road Imphal today, S Shyamcharan told reporters that BJP MLA Kh Ibomcha accusing the Congress and its MLAs of derailing the meeting is highly condemnable.
MLA Kh Ibomcha is BJP Manipur Pradesh's spokesperson.
Shyamcharan said the BJP spokesperson levelled the accusation against the Congress during an event at Imphal.
During the event, the BJP spokesperson also accused the Congress of stoking conflict.
However, the truth is otherwise.
The Congress has always tried to bring out the fault of the Government, said Shyamcharan.
The remarks he made in the event were lies and aimed at maligning the image of the MPCC and AICC, he said.
Shyamcharan said the Congress wholeheartedly welcomes the constitution of the House Committee to study illegal immigration and unnatural growth of villages and population in the State.
However, this committee is yet to function and is dormant, he added.
If the Committee starts functioning as it should then it will bring good to the State, he said.
