Speaking as the chief guest, Joybala said the Saturday Flower Market would provide a platform for local flower growers to sell their produce and help promote floriculture in the State.
Ponika also said that the Saturday Flower Market aims to promote local flower growers, nursery operators, bonsai institutes and women entrepreneurs by providing them with a platform to sell orchids, ornamental plants and other products.
She said the market would remain open every Saturday from 6 am to 12 noon.
Stating that flowers are an integral part of human life, from birth to death, she added that flowers also help people feel calm and happy.
Stating that Manipur imports flowers worth around Rs 200 crore annually, she appealed to florists and flower growers in the State to take steps to prevent such a huge sum of money from flowing out of Manipur.
She also said that Senapati and Ukhrul are known for growing a variety of flowers, while the number of farmers engaged in cut-flower and loose-flower cultivation is increasing in Imphal East and Imphal West.
At the event, flowers grown by around 25 farmers were showcased.
Ponika appealed to flower growers interested in selling their produce at the outlet to visit MOMA office and register themselves.
She said that alternative arrangements would be made if the outlet at Sanjenthong could not accommodate all the flower growers.
