Garbage adorn Thangal, Paona Keithels

Imphal, June 16 2024:
In the aftermath of the recent flood, waste management has taken a drastic U-turn in Thangal and Paona Keithel with garbage piling up in many corners.
Thangal and Paona Keithel are the two major markets in Imphal City, which is aiming to become a Smart City.
After the flood waters receded, large parts of the two markets have been transformed into trash dumping sites and employees tasked with maintaining cleanliness in the area have failed to perform their assigned duties.
As a result, market goers are left repulsed by the sight and smell of the piles of garbage which have become an eyesore for everyone concerned.

One main reason for the increase in trash has been reported as disposal of plastic and other waste materials by shop owners and residents living in the surrounding areas of the markets.
The shopkeepers and nearby residents continue to dump their garbage as they used to when the market area was inundated recently.
Notably, the condition of the road stretch from Samu Makhong to Thangal Keithel is also abysmal with street vendors selling their wares on the roadside leaving barely any room for pedestrians.
On top of congesting the road stretch, large quantities of polythenes and other waste materials are also disposed here.
In addition, shopkeepers along this road have added to the filth by depositing their trash at the base of the footpath.
Despite such hazardous circumstances, there is unfortunately a persistent culture of individuals engaged with cleaning Imphal City failing to do so until the garbage is piled up high.
In the face of all these factors, Thangal and Paona Keithel have become a blot on the landscape in the aftermath of the flood.
