Training programme for farmers opened

Imphal, March 15 2012: Though Imphal East district has fertile soil, production of rapeseed in the district does not reach up to the desired mark.

This was stated by Dr N Iboton, Dean, College of Agriculture, CAU today while speaking as the chief guest of the inaugural function of two-day training programme for progressive farmers of Imphal East held at the Conference Hall of CAU.

He said, scientists at the CAU are all set not only to launch massive cultivation of rapeseed in the district but also ready to give technical support to the farmers.

Elaborating that adequate water supply is needed for cultivation of rapeseed mustard, Dr Iboton stated that the University has launched projects for continuous water supply to farmers of the district.

President of the function, Dr M Premjit, Director of Extension Education, CAU Imphal said that the training programme for farmers was the seventh of its kind.

20 selected progressive farmers of the districts were also sent for a training programme on mustard seed cultivation at Bharatpur earlier.

Besides, 50 progressive farmers were also sent to Bharatpur for exposure visit.

He noted that rapeseed mustard is cultivated in area covering around 120 hectares in Imphal East district.

Prominently, ragini and M-27 varieties of mustard seeds are cultivated.

Dr Premjit further informed that he would put up proposal for setting up of water storage facility at various places in the district to the Planning Commission during a proposed meeting on March 18 .

The inaugural function was attended by Prof (Dr) N Ram Singh of the Department of Agri Economics, College of Agriculture, CAU as the guest of honour.

Around 80 progressive farmers of rape-seed have participated in the training programme.
