AMSU gears up for Realisation Day

Imphal, March 14 2026: The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has announced that it will observe the 46th Meekap Thokpa Numit (Realization Day) from March 17 to April 17, spanning a month.

Addressing the media in Imphal today, AMSU president Lukram Malangba Meitei stated that the month-long observance will be held under the theme 'Realize to Save the Indigenous People of Manipur' .

Stating that the programme will commence at 11 am on March 17 with an academic campaign at Manipur University, he said that on the final day of the programme, April 17, a yakairol (a sacred hymn) will be sung at 2 am, followed by floral tributes at Pishum Chinga Macha at 9 am .

A mass rally and a public meeting will take place on the final day, he added.

Malangba further said that various programmes, including a poster campaign, blood donation camp, painting competition, debate competition, street corner meetings, seminars, academic campaigns etc will be organised as part of the month-long observance.

He also stated that AMSU observes Meekap Thokpa Numit (Realization Day) on April 17 every year to commemorate the 1980 "Go Back Foreigners" movement, paying homage to two student protesters, Potshangbam Premananda and Huidrom Loken, who were killed in police firing.

Saying that illegal immigrants continue to pose a serious threat to the indigenous people of Manipur, he appealed to the people of Manipur to recognise the alleged covert agenda of the Government of India.

He also stated that the census operation must be conducted after updating the National Register of Citizens in the context of Manipur, to identify illegal immigrants in the State.

Malangba further stated that the population of Manipur in 1951 was 5.78 lakh according to the 1951 census report, and it increased to 28.56 lakh by 2011, as per the latest census data.

The AMSU president claimed that 1,101,934 migrants entered Manipur between 1951 and 2011 .

He also claimed that the population growth in the hill districts was significantly higher than in the valley districts between 1951 and 2011 .

Saying that 1,899 new villages emerged in Manipur between 1969 and 2023, he added that districts such as Churachandpur and Kangpokpi saw the sharpest increase.

According to him, between 1969 and 2023, 20 villages emerged in Imphal West, 45 in Imphal East, 45 in Thoubal and Kakching, 41 in Bishnupur, 23 in Jiribam, 296 in Chandel, 258 in Tengnoupal, 30 in Tamenglong, 11 in Noney, 542 in Kangpokpi, 21 in Senapati, 560 in Churachandpur, 62 in Pherzawl, 14 in Ukhrul, and 5 in Kamjong.

Manipur had its own policy regulating the entry of migrants before the merger with India, but the same was abolished on November 18, 1950, by the then Chief Commissioner of Manipur, Himmat Singh, he said.

This action, he argued, facilitated an unchecked influx of outsiders.
