Imphal, September 13 2024:
National Identity Protection Council (NIPCO) president Oinam Premjit has warned that the already disturbing crisis in Manipur may escalate to an unimaginable extent of violence if the Centre and the State Government don't put in sincere efforts to build confidence among the people and restore normalcy.
He made the statement during the 24th foundation day of NIPCO which was held at its office at Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai today.
The observance was attended by UPF, Manipur president Nongthombam Rupachandra, CADA president Hijam Priyokumar and MAPI Council president KC Romeo as presidium members.
At the function, Premjit asked whether the Central Government has a hidden agenda to keep the State on the boil and work against the interests of Meeteis.
Further asking why the Government is unable to restore normalcy despite the deployment of tens of thousands of Central security forces, he said that people are not satisfied with how these Central forces especially Assam Rifles have been handling the crisis besieging the State for over 16 months.
The NIPCO president expressed desire for both the Centre and the State Government to be sincere while taking peace building measures and to let the Central forces work neutrally to restore normalcy in the State.
It would be better to withdraw all these Central forces deployed in the State if they were sent to protect the Kuki militants, he added.
Is Manipur not a part of India.
Don't the lives of Manipuris matter to the Central leadership, he asked.
Stating that the Government should not invite a massive agitation similar to the one seen in June 2001 to take place again, he cautioned that Manipur will bum more ferociously if the crisis gets prolonged.
There is no guarantee that the State Assembly won't be reduced to ashes by the same people who want peace to prevail in the State, he further cautioned.
Sharing the pain and grief of people who are still taking refuge at relief camps and the families who have lost their loved ones amid the unrest, Premjit expressed desire for the Government to formulate a policy for the wellbeing of those who have been victimised by the Manipur conflict.
