Pathetic condition of NH-2 worsens

Senapati, August 12 2024: Considered as the main lifeline of Manipur, travelling along the National Highway-2 (Imphal-Dimapur Road) has become a nightmare for everyone, especially students and locals.

The NH-2 stretch between Koirengei and Mao has deteriorated extensively since last year as recent monsoon rains have wreaked havoc on many sections of the highway.

In addition, the prevailing law and order situation has halted repair works.

However, a reliable source has confirmed that NHIDCL appointed work agency LECKON has been instructed to resume the said works after the issue of security and deplorable NH-2 and NH-37 conditions was raised in the Parliament.

Meanwhile, apart from landslides affecting different locations along the Koirengei-Mao stretch, lack of proper drainage and private land development have caused mudslides during the monsoon.

Villages along the stretch including Hengbung, Mayangkhang Khunou, Mayangkhang, Ningthou-pham, Tumuyon Khullen and Chungoubung have been severely affected since last year.

From deep potholes and mud adorning the highway during monsoon to experiencing thick dust during dry season, the stretch between Hengbung and Chungoubung also continues to worsen every day.

Commuters and drivers continue to pay the price as LECKON had suspended the ongoing four lane construction since last year.

According to local sources, the four lane construction works were suspended due to land compensation issues which have remained unresolved till date.

However, land owners and Govt officials are likely to hold a crucial meeting next week to discuss the issue.
