Imphal, December 09 2013: In another landmark judgment, two persons accused in the rape case of a student of TG Higher Secondary School have been convicted by the Court today.

The Court will announce the quantum of punishment of the two convicts - Thongam Tarun s/o Jayanta of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai and Yumnam William s/o late Deben of Khagempali Pankha at the sentence hearing to be held on December 11 .

Speaking to reporters, Prosecution Director Ngangom Tejkumar said, the duo were convicted by the Court of Sessions Judge Manipur East A Guneshwar under IPC Section 376 (2) (G) (Gang Rape) and 120 -B (Criminal Conspiracy) during the final hearing of the case.

Saying that sentence hearing in the said case would be held on December 11, Tejkumar said that the duo would get befitting punishments as the Court has convicted them.

Twenty two witnesses gave statements before the Court in the case which held its first hearing on March 12 this year, he added.

Apart from this case, the culprits could be punished within seven months in the rape case of a woman U-morok trader earlier as well, he added.

Speaking on his professional life, Tejkumar said that he would not handle rape cases in future after the completion of the case of rape committed by a father-in-law and a rape case of a mute girl.

In the TG Higher Secondary School student rape case, Ng Tejkumar was assisted by Rakesh Meihoubam.

JAC members and people of the victim's locality shouted slogan to award befitting punishment to Tarun and Willian when they were brought at Court complex.

Meanwhile the JAC formed in connection with the rape of the young student as well as AMSU and UMO have welcomed the verdict of the Court.

Speaking to media persons at the AMSU head office this evening, UMO president Sorojini Leima on behalf of the JAC and AMSU hailed the verdict of the District and Sessions Judge, Manipur East.

She however said that the sense of justice having been delivered would be all that more if the harshest punishment as per the law of the land is passed against the rapists.

The Class XII girl was raped by the convicts, William and Tarun on October 20 last year at a fast food joint along the Airport road after spiking the food with drugs and when she lost consciousness the two took turns to outrage her modesty.
