Imphal, October 09 2026:
Condemning the alleged excesses committed by police in their attempt to arrest Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi at the Parliament Street, New Delhi on Thursday, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) staged a protest demonstration at Congress Bhavan, BT Road here today.
The protest held under the banner "Black Day in Indian Democracy" was participated by MPCC president Okram Ibobi, CLP leader K Meghachandra, MLAs K Ranjit, Okram Surjakumar, former Ministers Moirangthem Hemanta, Dr Khwairakpam Loken, Nameirakpam Loken, MPCC working president Victor Keishing, ex-MLAs and MPCC office bearers.

The protesters used placards which read "Black Day in Indian Democracy", "Our Vote, Our Right", "Save Constitution, Save Democracy", "Save Manipur" etc .
Other placards read "Rahul's fight is a fight for India", "Rahul stands with Gen Z", "Country stands with Rahul Gandhi", "Assault on Rahul Gandhi is assault on democracy", "Assault on MPs is assault on democracy" and "Gyanesh Kumar must step down" .
Speaking to media persons, Okram Ibobi said that the protest was staged under the aegis of AICC .
He said that the protest was against violation of Indian Constitution and attempts to obliterate democracy by the BJP-led NDA Government.
The role of Opposition parties in a democratic country is huge and they are entitled to stage all forms of democratic agitation against the Government's unpopular policies and wrong deeds, Ibobi said.
If the Government fails to work in the interest of the people, the Constitution permits Opposition parties to stage democratic protests against the Government, he said.
Instead of working to bring peace and harmony among different communities, the BJP Government has been investing all its efforts toward retaining power, the MPCC president said.
Rather than working to create employment and alleviate poverty, the BJP Government has been indulging in all kinds of strong-arm tactics, he said.
With the BJP Government appointing their hand-picked man to the post of the Chief Election Commissioner, many people across the country have started questioning how elections under such a CEC could be fair, Ibobi said.
He said that democracy in India is staring at a very bleak future.
He asserted that there will be peace in India and Manipur only when Governments are formed by genuine people's representatives.
In the name of Special Intensive Review (SIR), BJP has been deleting and adding voters as per their choice, the MPCC president and the former Chief Minister stated.
It was a matter of grave concern that security forces assaulted Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi as they took part in a democratic mass protest at Parliament Street demanding the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
He said that the Congress party condemned the assault on Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in the strongest terms.
