Unwarranted 'verification' of docs may leave JNIMS understaffed

Imphal, May 06 2023: Amidst the restive situation, the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) is facing a dicey situation with non-local doctors seeking to leave Manipur after some armed miscreants 'verified' their antecedents unruly on May 4 .

This was informed by the Director of JNIMS, Professor Laishram Deben during a press conference held this evening at the office of Medical Superintendent of JNIMS.

A sudden identity verification of non-local PG doctors, Senior Residents, Junior Residents and interns at JNIMS was carried out forcibly by miscreants equipped with firearms on May 4 evening at the hospital hostel where they were accommodated, the Director said.

The restive situation coupled with the unwarranted verification drive have created uneasiness among the doctors and they are seeking leave to return to their native States.

As such, the very development may hit the normal functioning of the institute, he said.

It was very unfortunate that the doctors were questioned and forced to produce their identity cards after the miscreants stormed the hostel, the Director said.

The unsanctioned drive carried out without the permission of Director, Medical Superintendent and warden is condemnable in the strongest term, he said while adding that such incidents have instilled fear and uneasiness among the non local doctors.

Citing the issue, the doctors have applied applications to return to their respective States until Manipur returns to normalcy, the Director said.

If the situation continues and if the doctors who are here to serve return to their native States, the medical institute will eventually face staff shortage and largely affect the overall functioning, he said while appealing all sections of the society to ensure no form of intimidation or disturbances are caused to doctors, nurses and other staff of the hospital.

Also appealing to all to refrain from any kind of agitation in and around the vicinity of the hospital, he also maintained that the hospital is providing all available services to the ailing and injured persons irrespective of their caste, creed or religious background at its best level and with full dedication.

He also urged all sections of the society to respect the doctors and other medical staff during such critical junctures.

Stating that providing accommodations to all medical staff is impossible, he also appealed to all to not hinder the movement of medical staff to help the institute function properly.

The press conference was also attended by the Medical Superintendent of JNIMS, Dr Khumukcham Lokeshwar.

Meanwhile, members of Citizens Club and Relief Committee JNIMS have resolved to stand guard at JNIMS Hospital gate amid present tense situation, said Citizens Club, Co-ordinating Body, Khurai and Relief Committee JNIMS today.

The decision to guard the premises of the hospital was taken as a precautionary measure and for safety of students, staff and patients, they said in a statement.
