Imphal, March 05 2025:
Prof Guruaribam Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, has become the first person from North East India to complete the prestigious Advanced Virtual Autopsy Training, said RIMS in a statement.
The programme was held from February 24 to February 28, 2025 at Leicester, United Kingdom.
Virtual autopsy (Virtopsy) is examination of the dead body by using imaging techniques such as Computed Tomography (CT) scans, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), 3D body surface scanning etc.
The method is preferred over conventional autopsies by relatives and religious communities as it preserves the body's integrity.
It enables complete, non-destructive gathering of findings from head to toe, clean and bloodless visualization of the documentation.
It also improves the quality of forensic reports, enabling simultaneous examination by different experts via tele-forensics.
The resulting data can be archived and reproduced without loss, analysed elsewhere, or distributed to specialists for technically demanding analysis, said RIMS.
Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma's achievement marks a significant advancement for forensic medicine in North East India.
His expertise will modernize forensic investigations at RIMS Imphal and inspire other professionals to adopt innovative technologies, bridging the gap between traditional and modern forensic practices in India, said RIMS .
