State observes National Cleanliness Day

Celebrating the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the State observed the National Cleanliness Day and Swachh Bharat Diwas 2026 at Gandhi Memorial Hall, Imphal today.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh attended the observance and led in paying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor emphasised that the vision of a clean and sustainable Manipur must be rooted in the timeless values and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi-truth, non-violence, simplicity, self-discipline and service.

He noted that cleanliness, for Gandhiji, was not merely a matter of personal hygiene, but a reflection of inner values, civic responsibility and concern for the well-being of society.
Governor said that the collective efforts of communities across the State have contributed to cleaner villages and public spaces.
He called for sustained efforts and active participation of every citizen, household and community to build a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Manipur.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh recalled the significant role played by Mahatma Gandhi during India's movement for independence and democracy, and said that he will continue to be remembered and respected as the Father of the Nation.
He said that the National Cleanliness Day is being observed across the country today, and urged every citizen to contribute towards maintaining a clean environment and society.
Stating that the Government is taking necessary steps to ensure cleanliness, he called upon the public to extend cooperation and take collective responsibility to maintain cleanliness in all public places.
On the state of the Khwairambamd Keithel, the Chief Minister said that ensuring proper cleanliness at the market would require strong supervision and enforcement by the police.
Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, MLA Khumukcham Joykisan Singh, MLA Thounaojam Shyamkumar, MLA Khongbantabam Ibomcha Singh, MLA Arunkumar Thangjam, MLA Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh, MLA Achab Uddin and MLA Dr Yumnam Radheshyam Singh, Chief Secretary Rajeev Singh Thakur, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, Director General of Police Mukesh Singh, and senior officers of the Government attended the event.
Artistes of Shri Shri Bal Mukunda Dev Government Music College and Government Dance College performed at the event.
