Sky Hospital Imphal has successfully conducted a device closure surgery to repair heart defects in a 28-year-old man.
A device closure surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used to repair heart defects, most commonly atrial septal defects (ASDs), ventricular septal defects (VSDs), and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) .
The man, from a village in Ukhrul district, was suffering from congenital heart defects.
He was bom with multiple holes in his heart - a condition known as large atrial septal aneurysm with multiple holes.
Briefing media persons today, Sky Hospital chairman and chief cardiologist, Dr L Shyamkishore said the individual was admitted at the hospital on July 24 following the advice of specialists in Manipur.
As a result of the defects in his heart, the individual was suffering from breathlessness, chest pain and low BMI (Body Mass Index).
On July 26, the doctors at Sky Hospital conducted a Transesophageal Echocardiography and detected the defects, and concluded that it could be repaired.
The Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a type of echocardiogram, an ultrasound test that creates images of the heart.
On July 31, Sky Hospital performed a device closure surgery and repaired the defects in the heart, giving the man a new lease of life, said Dr Shyamkishore.
The surgery was successful and the person is recovering.
He will be discharged today, said the doctor.
Dr Shyamkishore said Sky Hospital has successfully performed device closure surgeries to repair heart defects in many patients.
The Sky Hospital and Research Centre is one of the leading healthcare institutions in the State, Dr Shyamkishore added.
