Imphal, October 17: Imphal East District Police Commandos shot dead two suspected underground activities during an encounter which took place at Laphupokpi Chingkhong, about 4 kms north west of Irilbung police station in Imphal East District at around 11.45 am today.

According to SP of Imphal East District L Kailun, a Commando team led by OC M Mubi conducted a search operation in and around Laphupokpi area following reports of movement of underground elements at around 11.45 am today.

As the Commando team approached Laphupokpi Chingkhong, unidentified armed persons fired and hurled grenades towards the advancing team resulting in exchange of firing which lasted for almost 20 minutes.

After the firing ceased, the Commando team searched the area and found two bullet riddled bodies laying and recovered a 9 mm pistol (Noricon) loaded with four bullets and a Chinese made hand grenade from the site of the encounter.

The bodies of the two underground activists whose identities are yet to be established were retrieved by Irilbung police and later deposited at the mortuary of RIMS.

Both of them seem to be around 30 years of age.

One of them is clad in a faded-jean and black T-shirt while the other wore a Khadi-coloured trousers and an orange coloured T-shirt with black strips on the sleeves.

On the other hand, stepping up the counter insurgency operation, Bishnupur police commandos have reportedly apprehended two PREPAK activities of the VC group during the last 24 hours.

One lance corporal of the outfit identified as Ningthoujam Kishan alias Inaocha alias Prem alias Iboba (23) of Khordak Awang Leikai was arrested from Loktak Project Thong at around 3 pm yesterday.
