Senapati, January 24 2023:
The enormous risks involved in living under overhead High-Tension powerlines came dramatically close to adisaster on Monday, as a HT cable snapped and hit several homes in V akho (N ew Karong) .
Speaking to media persons, a resident of Vakho elaborated about the incident that could have easily turned tragic when the High-Tension powerline running above residential houses suddenly snapped and nearly hit a 5-year-old boy while he was playing.
"Miraculously, its spark only pierced through the boy's jacket", said the villager while adding that the incident reminded them of the potential danger of HT lines running above their houses.
Although many were relieved to see that no harm came to any of the residents this time, the villagers were still feeling traumatized by how close they came to a disaster.
The villagers appealed to the authority concerned to relocate the HT lines for the safety of the people living in the village.
In this regard, the Vakho/ Khabung Karong Village Authority has written a letter to the Deputy General Manager, Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited (MSPDCL), Senapati, urging the company to relocate the HT wires at the earliest.
In the letter, the village authority stated that the HT lines meant for the whole Senapati HQ area have become a safety risk and should be relocated as the powerlines pass just above many private residences in the area.
The VA also informed about the tragic incident which took place on Monday wherein a 5-year-old boy was almost killed and added that it was not an isolated incident.
"A similar incident also occurred more than five years ago when the same line snapped and nearly killed a resident", it added.
The VA further urged the department concerned to take responsibility and relocate the potentially hazardous power line without any further delay failing.
"The department concerned will be solely responsible for any unfortunate accident in the future if it fails to fulfil the demand of the villagers at the earliest", it cautioned.
