Assam Rifles organises tribute event

Assam Rifles conducted a wreath-laying ceremony at Sehlon in Chandel district in honour of lance naik Padam Bahadur Sunar, who made the ultimate sacrifice while displaying unwavering courage and dedication to duty during an intense counter-insurgency operation in Aizawl, Mizoram, on March 11, 1966 .
According to PRO IGAR (S), on the fateful day, Mizo National Front (MNF) insurgents launched a fierce attack on the Battalion Headquarters and other posts of 1 Assam Rifles, vandalising public offices and carrying out continuous gunfire and bombings.
Lance naik Padam Bahadur Sunar, despite facing overwhelming odds, bravely held his position, preventing insurgents from breaching the defences.
His bunker came under heavy fire, yet he continued to retaliate with equal intensity.
In the face of relentless assault, he fought till his last breath, ultimately succumbing to his injuries.
His extraordinary valour and selfless devotion to duty remain a shining example of supreme sacrifice, said the PRO.
Officials present at the ceremony recounted the heroic actions of Padam Bahadur Sunar, inspiring all ranks with a deep sense of pride and honour.
150 Assam Rifles personnel paid homage by laying wreaths ahd honour the brave-heart with a guard of honour, added the PRO .
