Workshop / awareness programme on PPV&FR Act held

A one-day workshop cum awareness programme on "Protection of Plant Variety and Farmers' Rights Act" was conducted today at Krishi Vigyan Kendra Andro, Imphal East.
The programme was jointly organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Imphal East, Directorate of Extension Education, Central Agricultural University, Imphal in collaboration with Protection of Plant Variety and Farmers' Rights Authority and the Department of Agriculture, Co-Operation & Farmers Welfare of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
The workshop cum awareness programme was graced by Dr Y Prabhabati Devi, Sr Scientist & Head, KVK, Imphal East; P Devkanta Singh, president, AMAPCON, Manipur; Ph Premila Devi, DAO, Imphal East and Dr I Meghachandra Singh, retd HORC, ICAR, Manipur Centre among others.
Farmers from different parts of Imphal East district also attended the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Ph Ranjit Sharma, Director of Extension Education, CAU, Imphal highlighted the need for farmers to be aware of the Protection of Plant Variety and Farmers' Rights Act.
Advocating for timely registration of different plant varieties produced by farmers.
Ph Ranjit informed that if a plant breeder attempts to register or rename a plant variety previously produced by another farmer, then the erring individual can be penalized under this Act.
Lauding the participation of representatives from all nine KVKs in the State, he added that the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Act (PPV&FR Act) 2001 protects plant varieties and recognizes farmers' rights.
He further shared that three climate resilient rice varieties have been produced in Manipur.
Professor Ph Ranjit also stressed on the need to strengthen the farming community and equip them with new technology/machinery.
Later, a technical session was held followed by an interaction programme between the farmers and the scientists.
