Assn questions purpose of Ithai Barrage

Imphal, August 22 2024: Loktak Project Affected Areas Farmers and Land Owners' Association has urged the state government to review purpose and functionality of the Ithai Barrage.

Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club here Thursday, Association general secretary Angom Tiken Singh said that due to inordinate delay in lifting the sluice gates of the Ithai Barrage, the rainfall for few days often leads to floods.

Stating that Bishnupur and Kakching districts experienced repeated flooding this year, consequently affecting the farmers, he continued that the recent flood has put immense pressure and burden on fish farmers as well, all primarily due to closure of the Ithai Barrage.

Thus, he urged the state government to monitor activities of the barrage, while requesting the government for extension of loan to the farmers.
