Sit-ins flay police excesses, Salungpham incident

A sit-in protest was staged by blocking half the NH-102 at Tangjeng on Thursday condemning alleged intimidation of locals Kiyam Makha Leikai by Thoubal police on Wednesday midnight.
The protest was organised by women of Kiyam Heibong Leikai and Kiyam Leitanpok under the aegis of Meitei Community Joint Co-ordinating Committee (MCJCC), a body of 18 clubs and organisations.
During the protest, the agitators chanted slogans and held placards denouncing police highhandedness and failure by the government to resolve the on-going ethnic violence.
Speaking to media persons, a meira paibi activists expressed strong resentment amid high tension aftermath of the Salungpham incident, the police conducting operation deep into the night at Kiyam Makha Leikai reeks of ill-intention.
"If the police plan to conduct an operation in the future, they should inform the members of the 18 clubs beforehand and the public would extend their support, she insisted.
Meanwhile, the public staged a sit-in protest at Thoubal Melaground on Thursday, demanding dismissal of police commandos involved in killing of a village volunteer from service immediately.
If the government continues to ignore the JAC's demands for dismissal of police personnel involved in the incident and unconditional release of six arrested village volunteers, then the public will launch various forms of agitation, cautioned Thoubal Khunou Meira Paibi secretary Memtombi Leimapokpam.
