Imphal, June 02 2024:
Loktak Development Authority (LDA) chairman M Asnikumar conducted onsite assessment of Merakhong Maril stream, which originates from the upper reaches of the Ngairangbam side of the Koubru Hill range.
This vital waterway traverses through Lamsang, Konthoujam, and Naoriya Pakhanglakpa assembly constituencies, flows through Nambol AC, and ultimately enters Loktak Lake at Ishok.
Recognising the stream's critical role in draining excess water from upstream areas, Asnikumar emphasised the urgent need for cleansing, widening, and de-silting the stream to prevent potential flooding and improve water management in the region.
The recent flash floods in the Naoriya Pakhanglakpa and Nambol areas were attributed to insufficient drainage capacity of the Merakhong Maril.
During his visit, Asnikumar interacted with locals and made a stop in Ishok village for discussions with the local pradhan Warepam Deben, social worker Jawanbi, and other representatives of Ishok GP.
These discussions focused on community efforts to maintain the stream and the support required to sustain these activities.
He praised the dedication and hard work of village volunteers in cleaning the stream and expressed gratitude towards the local MLA and minister Th Basanta for his significant contributions and support in these cleaning initiatives.
He assured the community of LDA's continued support and commitment to maintaining the stream's health, ensuring it continues to serve its vital role in the water management system of the areas.
He also highlighted and expressed gratitude for the thorough and active supervision of chief minister N Biren throughout
the entire process.
