Weavers urged to avail benefits of yarn scheme

Imphal, February 26 2025: An awareness programme for weavers/artisans on government schemes, initiatives and financial literacy organised by District Handloom and Textiles, Imphal East was held on Wednesday at PYC community hall, Bamonkampu.

Addressing the gathering, deputy director (handloom & textiles) Th Basantakumar, said launch of "Chief Minister's Yarn Scheme" is aimed at facilitating the weavers to purchase yarn at highly subsidised rate while explaining that weavers possessing weaver's card and yarn passbook may avail benefits of the scheme by visiting the district handloom and textiles offices.

According to Basantakumar, the Yarn Scheme was launched by former chief minister N Biren to.

address inconveniences faced by weavers in procuring yarn.

However, weavers not possessing weaver's card and yarn passbook cannot avail benefit of the scheme, he said and encouraged weavers to procure these documents.

He also informed that Handloom and Textiles Department is collaborating with Industry and Forest departments to provide assistance to weavers and artisans for the first time.

Imphal East DFO (central) Bikram Nade, who also attended the awareness programme, said that Vandhan Vikash Kendra of Forest department provides opportunity to local artisans and entrepreneurs on skill upgrading, capacity building, primary processing and value addition.

The scheme also aims to provide raw materials/forest products to local artisans and entrepreneurs for enhancing their economy and lifestyle, he added.

The awareness programme was also attended by Imphal East handloom project manager Y Ashalata Devi, officials and staff of the department and weavers of Bamonkampu and nearby areas.
