Imphal, August 14 2024:
Along with observing the Patriots' Day, a day-long discussion on 'worsening condition of Loktak Lake' was on Tuesday organised by Loktak Fisheries Welfare Association at the Thanga Heishnam Leikai residence of Russel Heishnam, who is the president of the association.
According to a statement of the Association, the discourse on condition of the Loktak Lake focussed on health issues faced by the fishers including diarrhoea, cold and flu, and skin diseases caused due to the contaminated water of the lake.
The discussion also raised concerns about the lake's future in case of inaction by the establishment to improve the condition with speakers attributing degradation of the fresh water body to highly contaminated water of state's major river flowing into the lake and use of fertilizers in the nearby paddy fields.
The statement appealed to the government to intervene immediately and save the Loktak Lake which is one of the largest fresh water bodies in India, from further deterioration.
