Health and hygiene drive, tribute event conducted

Assam Rifles organised a health and hygiene drive in association with village authorities and locals of Sorde village in Kamjong district.
According to PRO IGAR (S), the event was organised as a part of the environment-friendly initiative being undertaken by Assam Rifles.
A total of 48 locals including five representatives from Sorde village council actively participated in the drive wherein the areas in and around the village were cleaned by the attendees.
On the other hand, a wreath laying ceremony was conducted to honour the supreme sacrifices made by havildar Man Bahadur Thapa and riflemen Dharmesh Singh, Bahadur Singh Rawat, Vunkhalian and Lalthoun Gangte of 4 Assam Rifles.
On August 13, 1991, a convoy moving on Shangshak-Gamnam road near Lungreiphung came under ambush by insurgents, and the troops immediately retaliated the fire.
In the ensuing heavy exchange of fire, Man Bahadur, Dharmesh, Bahadur Rawat, Vunkhalian and Lalthoun sustained gunshot wounds and succumbed to injuries, thereby laying down their lives as supreme sacrifice for the nation, the PRO conveyed, adding that the ceremony commenced with wreath laying and motivational speech delivered to all ranks narrating the story of the brave hearts.
Thereafter, Guard of Honour was accorded.
