Imphal, July 31 2025:
Republican Party of India (Athawale) national secretary Maheshwar Thounaojam met Union minister of tribal affairs Jual Oram at the latter's office in New Delhi on Wednesday morning and urged for restoring Meetei/Meitei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) List.
Speaking to newspersons after the meeting, Maheshwar informed that Meetei/Meitei had existed as a tribe since time immemorial, as supported by many documents.
However, when the Indian Constitution came into being, the community was excluded from the ST List.
Apart from repeatedly urging the state government to include Meetei/Meitei in the ST List, Maheshwar also met the Governor during the President's Rule and submitted a memorandum with various supporting documents.
He submitted the same memorandum to the Union minister during the meeting, urging for restoring the ST status of Meetei/Meitei during the President's Rule in the state.
"The Union minister has assured to try his level best;" Maheshwar conveyed.
