Imphal, July 02 2025:
Following a major landslide in Phesama area on the Kohima-Mao section of National Highway 02, authorities have announced alternative routes to ensure uninterrupted movement of vehicles and essential supplies between Nagaland and Manipur.
The affected section, between chainage 192.050 km and 192.150 km, has rendered the usual route impassable, prompting immediate diversions for light and heavy vehicles, informed principal secretary (works) Ak Sinha.
In a press hand-out, the principal secretary stated that to facilitate continued connectivity, light motor vehicles are being rerouted via Dimapur-Kohima-Phesama-Kisama-Jakhama-Mao-Maram-Imphal, covering 193 km .
Loaded vehicles having two axles are being diverted through Dimapur, Kohima, Chakabama, Kidima, Mao, Maram and Imphal, a stretch measuring 207 km.
Additionally, two routes suitable for 3-axle vehicles (load of 25 metric tonnes) have been proposed: one from Dimapur via Jharnapani, Jalukie, Peren, Maram to Imphal (293 km), and another from Dimapur through Kohima, Chakabama, Jessami, Ukhrul to Imphal (372 km).
The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) is currently engaged in restoring the damaged portion of the highway, with the Nagaland government having made land available for the work.
However, due to the large scale of the task, full restoration is expected to take time.
A 28km stretch between Mao, Kidima and Chakabama - of which 9 km lies within Manipur - is under the care of the Manipur Public Works Department.
Road widening and laying of Granular Sub-base (GSB) are in progress, and further work involving Wet Mix Macadam (WMM) and Semi-Dense Bituminous Concrete (SDBC) will proceed once weather permits.
This portion remains open and is currently accommodating all types of traffic without disruption.
The principal secretary also thanked the Nagaland government for its cooperation in the diversion efforts and communicating the need for alternative heavy vehicle routes to ensure the regular supply of goods to Manipur.
