Private rehab centres under DESAM's scanner

Imphal, May 02 2022: Expressing concern over periodical reports of unwanted incidents in some of the private rehabilitation centres in the state, Democratic Students' Alliance Manipur (DESAM) has appealed to the state government to make a regulatory framework for the private rehabilitation centres and to shut down unregistered centres at the earliest.

In a statement, DESAM HQ special task force and anti-drug abuse secretary Leishungbam Rajesh opined that though private rehabilitation centres are playing a major role in rehabilitation of drug addicts, the unchecked establishment of private rehabilitation centres has become a major issue of late with some individuals running such centres solely for financial purpose.

In the absence of a proper regulatory framework, many of the centres are abusing their inmates leading to death of many such inmates.

The latest incident of death of an inmate took place at Th Biren Rehabilitation Centre where one Tekcham Joysanker of Pangal Siphai died with multiple assault marks found on his body.

Stating that this is not the first incident of such kind, DESAM drew attention of the government to come up with a regulatory framework for the private rehabilitation centres and shut down unregistered centres before the situation goes out of control.
