Commissioner doubts diligence of Govt school teachers
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, April 29 2023: The number of students enrolled in government educational institutions remains low despite no dearth of qualified teachers and one main reason for this has been lack of initiative among government teachers, stated commissioner (education) H Gyanprakash.

Speaking at the incentive award distribution function to outstanding students who cleared HSLC exam and higher secondary exam in 2022-2023 at Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDF) auditorium, here, on Saturday, H Gyanprakash conceded that the level and standard of government schools in Manipur declined from the past.

At one point of time, government schools were compatible with private schools but students of government schools rarely figure among top 25 positions in HSLC exam nowadays, he pointed out, and stressed the need for finding out reasons behind the unwillingness of students to study at government schools.

Government school teachers not only lack initiative and hard work but also rarely go to their place of posting, Gyanprakash said, while claiming that record in this regard is intact with the government.

It is the priority of the students to study at schools where teachers guide them well and government teachers have to work accordingly at schools where they are posted to increase enrol ment of students in government schools, he said.

According to H Gyanprakash, large numbers of students opt for some government schools for admission and time has come to establish more such schools.

As part of the School Fagathanshi Mission launched in 2018 under the keen initiative of chief minister N Biren to improve government schools, government has been felicitating outstanding students, he added.

Apart from recruiting many teachers in the recent past, government is likely to recruit more teachers in near future to fill up short -ages.

However, efforts being made by the government for improving schools will be meaningless if teachers do not serve diligently, H Gyanprakash said and appealed to government teachers to discharge their duty and responsibility properly.

In his speech, Education-S director L Nan-dakumar stressed that students should not stop working hard even after getting awards as they have many obstacles to overcome in the path to achieving goal in life.

He also said that government teachers are well qualified but they need to work with dedication.

Urging teachers to stop the habit of lobbying officials for posting at their preferred schools, Nandakumar said that the government has a data for such teachers and they should not be surprised when government initiates action against them at appropriate time.

According to L Nandakumar, the state has a total of 4670 schools and 2856 of them are being run by the government.

Among the government schools, 1885 are under school education department, 962 under tribal welfare department and six under social welfare department.

A total of 6,31,471 students from class I to class XII are enrolled in the total 4670 schools and they make 20-25 percent of total population of the state.

With the coming of Act East Policy, students of the state need to be trained fully or else they will be rendered useless in near future, he said.

Additional director (Education-S-valley) Bisheshwor Khumukcham said that the felicitation ceremony has been organised for students of government schools who secured positions in BSEM and COHSEM examinations as well as to honour two highest mark scorers from all districts of the state.
