Imphal, July 26 2025:
A sensitisation-cum-awareness programme on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was held Saturday at the High Court of Manipur complex.
The event was jointly organised by Manipur Judicial Academy (MJA) and the department of social welfare.
The programme was participated by persons with disabilities and featured three technical sessions led by various resource persons.
Topics discussed included the role of judicial officers and public prosecutors under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and its provisions.
Resource persons at the event included Handicapped Development Foundation chief functionary S Jasobanta, social welfare deputy director L Dhaneshwor, MJA joint director M Manojkumar, and MJA director Justice G Gaiphulsillu Kabui.
Speaking at the programme, Justice Gaiphunsillu Kabui Recalled that the United Nations Convention in 2017 declared that resolutions concerning the rights of persons with disabilities must be implemented across countries.
She emphasised that persons with disabilities must be treated equally, without discrimination or contempt, adding that India has enacted and amended several laws over time to align with this global commitment.
She added that the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, was introduced to ensure that persons with disabilities are not looked down upon and are treated with dignity and affection.
The Act seeks to guarantee equal access to opportunities, education, and financial support, and affirms the need to create inclusive infrastructure in public spaces.
She also informed that steps are being taken to improve accessibility within the High Court of Manipur to make the premises more friendly for persons with disabilities.
